I get asked these questions frequently. While Music Therapy as a profession has been around since World War II, it is still somewhat unknown and misunderstood.
Music Therapy can look different depending on the individual or group you are helping. At Good Grooves Music Lessons and Therapy, we primarily work with children with ADHD, ADD, autism, and other neurological conditions. When working with these populations, we use music to help strengthen relationships, increase attention span, process emotions, and improve speech and communication.
Music Therapy works because music is not solely on the right or left hemisphere in the brain, music lights up the entire brain! Different areas of the brain control different functions; emotions, speech, memory, motor, sensory, impulse control, etc.
The effectiveness lies in music’s ability to activate more than one of these areas at the same time. At Good Grooves Music, we use this scientific evidence to:
- promote speech development
- teach coping techniques to express emotions in a non-threatening way
- strengthen emotions and bring healing
- lengthen attention span
- improve impulse control
- develop reading comprehension
- and more!
Music Therapists achieve these results not by just listening to music with clients, but by allowing the clients to create with music. Music therapy encourages clients to play, to experiment, to move, to sing, and to fully engage with the music.
Music therapy is an effective and fun way to engage the body and mind in remarkable ways!
