What can I expect during an Introductory Music Lesson?

At Good Grooves Music Lessons and Therapy, we offer an Introductory Music Lesson to all of our new students. This is a 60-minute lesson focused on building a positive rapport between the student and teacher. We find this lesson sets the student up for successful and fun music lessons and allows the teacher to determine the skill level of the student.

During an initial phone call, a day and time will be established for this introductory lesson. You will receive a reminder email 24 hours before the lesson and then our music teacher will arrive at your home at the scheduled time.

The first 30-minutes of the lesson will be a “getting to know you” time for the student and the teacher. The student can show the teacher their favorite toys/activities and talk with them about their interests. The teacher will share relevant information with the student as well in order to further develop a positive teacher/student relationship. It is always more fun to learn an instrument from someone you enjoy.

The second half will be a typical lesson focused on the instrument. This will allow the student to show off any skills they already have on the instrument and for the teacher to evaluate their level and determine a plan for future lessons. If the student is a beginner, the teacher can begin instruction at this time.

Within 2 days of the lesson, we will follow up to see how it went and if you and your child would like to continue with weekly lessons. The teacher will make recommendations for the frequency and length of future lessons and what materials they recommend. If you choose to continue with weekly lessons, the day and time will be determined.

Our goal at Good Grooves Music Lessons and Therapy is to foster a love of music in all of our students so we do not require a set amount of practice time per week. We, of course, encourage practice, but we hope it is student-driven and not made into a chore. Music has the ability to be a wonderful coping skill and emotional outlet for our students and we want lessons to be a positive experience in order to allow for this.
