Will Insurance Cover Music Therapy?

Will insurance cover music therapy? It can, depending on your insurance company.

Music therapy is still relatively unknown in the insurance world and as a result is not covered under most insurance. There are some instances with insurance companies where music therapy has been reimbursed, but is only on a case by case basis.

If You Want to Pursue Reimbursement

If you are interested in trying for reimbursement with your insurance company, we are happy to help.

Here’s a bit about the process.

  1. Reach out to your insurance company and inquire as to if music therapy has historically been covered. If reimbursement is possible and will save you money then we will proceed.
  2. You will need to obtain a letter of medical necessity from your Primary Care Physician. We can help with this if needed.
  3. We will conduct a formal music therapy assessment and develop a treatment plan, write goals, and identify CPT codes for treatment.
  4. You will again call the insurance company to check on benefits.
  5. Obtain prior approval for services if necessary (this can take some time).
  6. If music therapy is approved for reimbursement we will begin services for the time period approved by your insurance company.

The more people who pursue music therapy reimbursement, the more likely it will be covered as an in network service over the coming years. So, it is definitely worth pursuing if it will save you money!
